Cigarettes worth Rs. 3 mil seized by Airport Customs

Cigarettes worth Rs. 3 million that were smuggled into the island have been confiscated by Airport Customs.

Deputy Director of Airport Customs, Parakrama Basnayake stated that the cigarettes had been packed in 300 cartons.

He added that the illegal items reached the Katunayake international airport at approximately 2.00 am today (29), aboard two aircrafts travelling from Doha, Qatar, bearing the numbers QR 668 and QR 1070.

The suspects concerned are said to be two businessmen residing in Colombo, aged 36 and 28 years.

The Deputy Director further stated that the suspects would be fined after completion of the investigation, and that the goods would then be destroyed.
