Ven. Tempitiye Sugathananda Thero remanded following anti-SAITM protest

Convener of the Inter-University Bhikku Action Committee, Ven. Tempitiye Sugathananda Thero has been placed in remand custody.

The arrest was made in the evening yesterday (22) whilst the Thero was receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.

Ven. Tempitiye Sugathananda Thero sustained injuries during the situation of unrest that arose during the anti-SAITM protest and subsequent vandalization of the Health Ministry last Wednesday (21).

Following a presentation of facts by the Maradana Police, Maligakanda Additional Magistrate arrived at the Colombo National Hospital and ordered that the Thero be placed in remand custody till July 05.

Accordingly, the Thero is now receiving treatment under special Police surveillance.

Meanwhile, a few university students have been arrested on charges of destroying public property at the Ministry of Health.

Investigations are being conducted under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector-General of Colombo to facilitate the arrest of the remainder.

During the unrest that broke out in the Ministry of Health premises, around 80 students were injured by the Police whilst a few Police officers also sustained injuries.
