Removal of illegal buildings: Patali vows no political interference

There will be no political interference in the effort to demolish illegally built buildings in Colombo, a top government minister vowed today.

Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said illegally built houses and offices have been demolished despite the fact to whom it belonged to and the process will continue.

The minister also told reporters in Colombo that the recognized illegal construction sites which hinder drainage of rain water in Peliyagoda, Kelaniya and Kolonnawa would be removed.

Minister Ranawaka made these remarks following the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Centre for Flood Control and Water Management.

The government earlier also said that it will demolish an estimated 10,000 illegal buildings in Colombo, a day after a seven-storey wedding hall collapsed, killing one and wounding 23 in May.
