Court to consider petition seeking probe into Welikada riot deaths

July 28, 2017   01:52 pm

The Appeal Court has decided to consider the petition filed seeking a formal investigation into the death of the 27 prison inmates, during the Welikada Prison riot.

The petition was put forward by a former inmate of the prison, Sudesh Nandimal de Silva, who was a witness to the incident.

In his petition to the Appeal Court, de Silva stated that no investigation into the deaths of his former fellow inmates was made by the Police.

Hence, the Appeal Court had decided to consider the petition on September 12, 2017.

The riot which broke out back in November of 2012 at the Welikada Prison in Colombo, claimed the lives of 27 inmates, during a routine search carried out by the officers looking for illegal items.
