Court turns down Udayanga’s appeal to recall warrant

August 21, 2017   03:07 pm

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today rejected the appeal made by Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga seeking to recall the warrant issued for his arrest and to remove the travel ban imposed on him.

The appeal, presented to the court by the attorneys representing the former diplomat, was taken into consideration by Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne.

An arrest warrant was issued through Interpol for Weeratunga, who is absconding abroad, in connection with the case filed over the controversial MiG aircraft deal.

The magistrate stated that the charges leveled against the accused do not require a warrant for his arrest and that what he should do is surrender himself to the nearest police station without requesting the court to recall the arrest warrant or travel ban.
