Govt to provide school children with free Health Insurance

The cabinet has approved an initiative to provide free Health Insurance for all school children in coalition with Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd.
Accordingly, the Insurance scheme will entail a free insurance cover of LKR 200,000 for 4.5 million school children aged 5-19. According to a statement following cabinet decision, LKR 2.7 billion from the 2017 has been allocated for the project.
The scheme will cover all students in government schools, non-aided or aided private schools, Pirivena schools and international schools.
The proposed insurance cover will include the following clauses,
OPD treatment - RS. 10.000
Hospitalizations - up to Rs. 100,000
Sudden death of a pupil - Rs. 100,000
Sudden death of a parent - Rs. 75,000
Total Disability - Rs. 100,000
Partial Disability - Rs. 50,000 to 100,000
In accordance with recommendations made by the Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee, an annual premium of LKR 2,384 billion will be paid to Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd once the details of the cover are finalized.
The proposal which was brought forward by The Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam after initially receiving approval from the former Finance Minister during his tenure.
