Suspects arrested over Galle incident remanded till Nov 30

The 19 suspects that were detained earlier today (18), for their alleged involvement in the Galle incident that ensued last night have been remanded till November 30, following a hearing at the Galle Magistrate’s court.

19 persons were arrested for their connection to the tense situation that ensued in Galle last night (17). 

Police media spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekara stated that the curfew that was imposed in several areas of the south was lifted at 9.00am today (18). 

STF personnel were deployed to several regions upon the instruction of IGP Pujith Jayasundara. Accordingly approximately 200 police officers and STF personnel were deployed last night. 

Police curfew was imposed in several areas in the Galle District until 9.00am today (18) due to a tense situation, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said. 

He stated that police curfew has been imposed in Kurunduwatta, Maha Hapugala, Welipitimodara, Ukwatta, Ginthota and Piyandigama Grama Sevaka Divisions. 

The Police Spokesman said that the curfew was imposed in order to control a tense situation prevailing in the area and to restore normalcy.

According to reports, several houses and shops were attacked by angry mobs in the Gintota area.
