SC orders to produce video footage of Ranjan’s statement

November 21, 2017   01:03 pm

The Supreme Court today (21) ordered the respective media channel to submit the video footage containing Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayke’s statement of alleged contempt of court.

This was when two cases against Deputy Minister of Social Empowerment, Welfare and Kandyan Heritage, Ranjan Ramanayake, were taken up for hearing today.

The Supreme Court issued the order following a request made by the attorney representing the petitioner’s party.

The cases were taken up for hearing before a three-member judge bench comprising Chief Justice Priyasath Dep, Justice Eva Wanasundara and Justice Vijith Ratmalgoda, the Ada Derana court reporter said.

Two petitions were filed against the Deputy Minister by Sinhala Ravaya and retired Air Force Officer Sunil Perera alleging that the Deputy Minister vehemently insulted the reputation of the judiciary and lawyers at a press conference held on August 21.

The petitions highlighted the fact that such defamatory statements will shatter public confidence and provide a warped image of the judiciary to the people of Sri Lanka.

The case will be taken up for hearing on December 14.
