President Maithripala Sirisena was ready to give up even his Party Presidency for the unity of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Minister of Special Assignments Sarath Amunugama said.

“The Central Committee along with the President was ready to make a huge sacrifice for the betterment of the Party. However he did not get a positive response from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP),” the Minister added.

While a majority of the SLPP members wanted to unite with SLFP,it was avoided due to the want of a few SLPP members, Amunugama said.

“The SLFP supporters know the efforts we took to unite the party. Hence they will place their trust and support on us at the upcoming Local Government elections” said the Minister.

He made this sentiment while briefing media in Kandy.
