The Chairman of the Kataragama Pradeshiya Sabha Chanaka Amila Rangana and three others have been remanded by the Tissamaharama Magistrate in connection with the attack on the Kataragama Police Station in January.

They were ordered remanded until May 02 by the court, Ada Derana reporter said.

The PS Chairman and several others were charged over the incident and for damaging public property. He surrendered to the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court through a lawyer this morning (23).

The incident occurred on January 20 when an angry mob of residents attacked the police station during a violent protest in Kataragama against the shooting of a motorcyclist that had refused to heed police orders to stop.

Police had to fire tear gas to disperse the unruly crowd while 58 persons including 13 women were arrested the following day over the incident and later granted bail.
