Ranil suitable for Presidential candidacy - Mervyn

April 25, 2018   08:32 am

Former Minister Mervyn Silva says that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is the only person suitable for Presidential candidacy as he is not a person who is power hungry.

Responding to questions from journalists in Colombo, he says among the current political leaders in Sri Lanka, Ranil WIckremesinghe and the United National Party (UNP) are the only ones capable of running the country.

UNP doesn’t have a better leader lined up for another long time, says Silva. He stated that there is more time to choose the leadership of the party. He also mentioned that if PM Ranil Wickremesinghe resigns as the leader now, it will cause conflicts inside UNP for the leadership.

Commenting on the former President contesting in the provincial elections, Silva said that people who are contesting are those who have greed. He further said, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, although he worked for the country, wasn’t systematic about it.

According to Silva, he too was in fear for his life and former President Rajapaksa had a separate team for kidnapping people using white vans.

When inquired whether he would join UNP, the former Minister stated that UNP is the only party worth joining at the present.
