Maldivian President-elect begins work to free political leaders

Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MPD)’s Chairperson Hassan Latheef has revealed that President Elect, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has begun work to free all unfairly incarcerated political prisoners.

Latheef announced this while speaking at a press conference hosted in MDP’s main office on Monday, going on to reveal that, discussions have been held with the current authorities to release wrongfully convicted political prisoners.

“Self-exiled convicts will also be brought back to Maldives with this transaction, which also requests President Yameen to release all wrongfully incarcerated political leaders. Work is currently being carried out to free political convicts” said Latheef.

While Latheef has made this announcement, President elect Solih and incumbent President Yameen had met in the President’s office on Monday morning, details of which are yet to be revealed.

Adhaalath Party’s leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, among several others have been unfairly incarcerated in President Yameen’s administration, out of which, trials have already begun for some.

The results on Sunday showed that Solih won with 58 percent, which is the highest any presidential candidate has received in a presidential candidate in the country. Once in office, he will become the first Maldives President that is not native to the capital city, Male’.
