Amendments to circular on Grade 1 admissions illegal – AG Dept

The Attorney General’s Department has ruled that the amendments made by the Western Provincial Council to the circular, issued by the Ministry of Education on the admission of children to Grade 01, are illegal.
The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had received information that the relevant circular was amended by the Western Provincial Council.
He had then informed the Secretary the Ministry of Education Sunil Hettiarachchi to look into the issue and take necessary measures.
When queried by the Secretary regarding the said amendments, the Attorney General’s Department had informed that the amendments made by the Western Province Council to the relevant circular are not in accordance with the Constitution.
The Secretary to the Education Ministry was also instructed to inform the Western Provincial Council to implement the circular without making any changes to it.
The Ministry of Education stated that the Chief Secretary of the Western Provincial Council has been informed in writing regarding the decision of the Attorney General’s Department.
