Rains to reduce from Sunday

November 9, 2018   08:27 am

The low pressure area to the South-west of Sri Lanka is moving away from the island, and hence the prevailing showery condition in the Northern, North-central and Eastern provinces is likely to reduce from Sunday (Nov 11), the Meteorology Department said.

However, it said that showers will occur at times in most parts of the island today.

Heavy rainfall above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces.

Fairly cold weather can be expected in the Northern and North-central provinces.

Misty conditions may occur at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the morning, the department said.

Sea Area:

Under the influence of the low pressure area, the prevailing showery and cloudy condition over the sea area to the South-west of Sri Lanka is likely to continue.

Showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas around the island. Heavy showers or thundershowers can be expected at some places in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be North-easterly over the sea areas extending from Potuvil to Chilaw via Trincomalee, Kankasanturai and Puttalam. Winds will be North-westerly to South-westerly in the other sea areas around the island.

Winds speed will be 30-40 kmph over sea areas around the island. The deep sea areas extending from Mannar to Potuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota can be rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times.

Temporarily strong gusty winds (up to 70-80 kmph) and rough seas can be expected during thundershowers, the Met. Department warned.
