After the upcoming General Elections the United National Party (UNP) will officially function as the United National Front (UNF), said Mangala Samaraweera of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (Mahajana Wing) this morning (February 24).

The UNF is an electoral alliance formed by the United National Party, a section of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress, several members of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and the Western People’s Front. The SLFP (M) of one time powerful Minister in the Chandrika Bandaranaike government Mangala Samaraweera too was a constituent partner.

At the last parliamentary elections held on 2 April 2004, the UNF won 37.8% of the popular vote and 82 out of 225 seats.
