The Supreme Court this morning (March 10) directed the Attorney General to advise the State media to be impartial when broadcasting news and or programmes during the run-up to the General Elections.
Dismissing a petition filed by three citizens, claiming that the State media was biased towards the government candidate during the last Presidential Election, the three judge Bench headed by Chief Justice Asoka de Silva stated that in the event they breach this discipline, those affected could forward a complaint to the Elections Commissioner, who in turn has the authority to appoint a Competent Authority to monitor the State media, the Supreme Court has stated.
