In a society which treats women only as playthings, they can expect justice only if females take on the mantel of leadership, said United National Front Kurunegala organizer Ms. Upulanganie Malagamuwa.

Addressing a meeting of women at Devasarana Centre in Kurunegala, Ms. Malagamuwa said that sexual abuse of a large number of young girls coming to Kurunegala town for tuition classes especially during the weekends has turned out to be a major problem.

She lamented that according to Police investigations as many as 37 of these girls arriving at Kurunegala town for tuition classes are abused by their boyfriends on an hourly basis at various hotels, restaurants and secluded places.

With females being 56 per cent of Sri Lanka’s population and almost 52 per cent having the right of franchise, their grievances are still going unnoticed, said Upulanganie Malagamuwa.

She called on especially the female voters to strengthen the leadership among them to solve their grievances.
