Hilton Colombo joined Hilton Worldwide and the Hilton Brand in committing to the World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Earth Hour initiative this March for the second consecutive year.

Earth Hour is an initiative launched by WWF three years ago, is a global call to action to take responsibility and to get involved in leading the way towards a sustainable future. By encouraging all to take a simple step, the Earth Hour movement symbolizes the impact that we can have by working together to protect our future. This worthy initiative began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and business turned off their lights for one hour to make their stand against climate change. What was initially a one-time event has turned into a global movement. Hilton Colombo participated in this worthy cause last year for the first time and continues to support for many years to come.

Hilton Colombo’s General Manager, Jerome Auvity said “Once again the hotel was privileged to host Earth Hour in the hotel and everyone enjoyed the celebrations as much as we did organizing it.”

March 27 at 8.30pm all lights were switched off in all the Food & Beverage outlets and lobby, The laundry machines, boilers, swimming pool pumps, tennis court lights, hotel logo neon light, concessionaire shop lights and pond pumps was switched off too from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on the night of “Earth Hour”.” Apart from the above one elevator was shut down, back corridor lights was reduced by 50% and all floor corridors kept on an emergency lighting for one hour. However the hotel did not neglect any of their customers as there were candles lit in all Food & Beverage outlets and the lobby area. Once again the highlight of the event was of course the “Earth Hour Cake” the team prepared in a shape of an energy saving bulb.

Apart from the above activities team area lights were reduced by 50% and also a training programme was held by Chief Engineer Eshantha Silva to the Housekeeping department and the Engineering department on how to save energy in the hotel.
