Sri Lanka launches crackdown on illegal gem mining

A systematic programme has been launched to nab those who are engaged in
illegal gem mining, Chairman of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority
Hasitha Tillekaratna said.
He told a meeting that at present a large number of persons who do not posses
the necessary documentation to engage in gem mining.
Around 20 locations, where gem mining was being carried out illegally, were
raided by the Raid Unit of the Gem and Jewellery Authority.
According to a report, environmentalists have expressed their deep concern over
the issue, stating that illegal gem mining is a violation of all environment
acts and the National Gem and Jewellery Authority Act.
