If only you had heeded my request…., Sangaree writes to President

If the government had heeded the repeated requests by him for the disarming of individuals and groups, it would have saved the lives of several persons and the good name of the Government, states Tamil United Liberation Front leader V. Anandasangaree in a letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The letter in full:

His Excellency Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa,

Temple Trees,

Colombo, 03.

Your Excellency,

Threat of Armed Groups to Civilians

During the past few years I had been repeatedly requesting you to relieve all armed groups of their weapons and to provide them with Government security if they ask for it. I don’t really understand as to why the Government is reluctant to take action in spite of repeated requests from me and much more from the public. If firm action had been taken it would have saved the lives of several and also the good name of the Government.

The decomposed body of a 17 year old student who was abducted two weeks back for ransom had been found buried in a pit. At least one suspect had been arrested and remanded. Some others are still wanted. My concern is that this case too will meet with the same fate like many others in which the offenders escaped sue to lack of evidence.

Please take immediate steps to compel all unauthorized persons and all groups in possession of arms to surrender the arms in their possession which will enable witnesses to come out openly to give evidence without any fear of retaliation by interested parties.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,

V. Anadasangree – President, Tamil United Liberation Front
