Not all Rajapaksas are on the top of the preference list of the Hambantota district, political sources close to the party told Adaderana today.
With counting of preference votes still almost ending, sources say that Namal Rajapaksa, the President’s son is leading the preference list in Hambantota. However, Mahindananda Amaraweera has managed to keep his popularity at the number two spot while Minister Chamal Rajapaksa, brother of the President is said to be in the third place followed by another Rajapaksa, Nirupama.
V.K. Indika, the former Provincial Councillor of the Southern Provincial Council has managed to come in at the number five spot.
United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has polled 174,808 votes amounting to 62.87 per cent of the votes polled, bagging five of the seven seats in the district. The United National Party (UNP) has polled 83,027 being 29.86 per cent of the votes and pocketed the two remaining seats.
Here again, with the Hambantota area being once a strong area of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) with the same JVP as the main constituent party but with General (retired) put forward as its leader, has polled only 19,186 votes, making a mere 6.9 per cent and failing to obtain a seat.
