Sri Lankan accused of people smuggling in Aussie

A Sri Lankan man has been charged with people smuggling by the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Home Affairs Minister Brendan O’Connor said the charge brought the total number of people accused of people smuggling offences in Australiato 133 since September 2008.

 

 

“(This) is a significant achievement for the AFP and the Australian government,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

 

 

The man - who has been charged with allegedly trying to help 54 people illegally come to Australiaby boat last September - was due to appear in Perth Central Law Court on Tuesday.

 

 

He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years jail and a $220,000 fine.

 

 

Mr O’Connor said Labor was committed to working closely withAustralia’s neighbours to address the issue of people smuggling.

 

 

Since September 2008, Indonesian authorities have disrupted 131 potential people smuggling ventures, arrested 61 people on related offences and stopped more than 3000 foreigners from travelling to Australia.
