Second Court Martial continues despite Gen. Fonseka’s illness claims

May 5, 2010   09:38 pm

Both General Courts Martial, probing charges against General (retired) Sarath Fonseka were convened to resume their sittings on Wednesday (5), as determined earlier by members of these tribunals.

The first CourtMartial, appointed to try the respondent on charges of participation in political work while still in service, was convened at 9.30 a.m. and adjourned until 2.00 p.m. on 1st June 2010.

General Fonseka while stating that he was medically not fit refused to appear before the Court Martial. His complaint of sickness prompted a medical specialist and a medical officer to examine him. The Medical officers after examination maintained that General Fonseka was not physically unfit to appear before the Court Martial.

Though General Fonseka was trying to evade Wednesday (5) afternoon’s second Court Martial on grounds of ill-health, his defence counsel, after advising their client however managed to bring him back to the Court Martial for hearing. The second Court Martial was adjourned until 2.00 p.m. on 24th May. - (Sri Lanka Army)
