Twelve houses within a section of Albion Estate at Agrapatana in Nuwara Eliya were gutted by fire early this morning, said Police media spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody.

Two persons attempting to extinguish the fire in the early hours have been injured and admitted to the Agrapatana Hospital, the spokesman said.

The reason for the fire and the extent of damage has not been estimated yet. Those families affected are now accommodated at the Mariamman kovil (temple) in the area.

Meanwhile, a predawn fire has been reported from the Nalluruwa area in Panadura. The fire which had broken out at around 1.30 am has caused considerable damage to a factory producing towels, Adaderana correspondent in the area said.

While the reason for the blaze has still not been ascertained, the Fire Brigade had taken around three hours to douse the flames, our reporter said.
