Stern action will be taken against those who engage in illegal excavations or digging on either side of railway tracks. Irresponsible actions like these have caused damage to the signal system, states Sri Lanka Railways.

As a precautionary measure, a distance of two metres on either side of railway tracks have been considered as reservations, says Sri Lanka Railways Commercial Director Wijaya Samarasinghe.

Mr. Samarasinghe further adds that by the digging of drains by certain residents near railway lines to divert rain water, similar problems to the railways signal systems have been caused recently. This had disrupted train services on several lines, he added.

In future, any person or organization which wants to carry out such digging or excavations on either side of the stipulated areas will have to obtain written permission from the Railways Department before engaging in such activities, Wijaya Samarasinghe added.
