Govt. not doing enough for flood victims: UNP

May 24, 2010   03:27 pm

The Government has not done enough for the victims of the recent floods, said United National Party media spokesman and Parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatilleke said this morning.

The authorities concerned were blaming the unauthorized constructions as being responsible for the floods in Colombo during the past weeks and even before that. These ‘unauthorised’ structures are mostly due to the backing of certain politicians, Mr. Karunatilleke claimed.

If not, how can these so called ‘unauthorised’ constructions enjoy public utilities like water and electricity and even pay taxes and possess assessment numbers provided by the local councils, queried Gayantha Karunatilleke while addressing the media at a briefing at the Opposition Leader’s office at Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha in Colombo this morning.

The Government is using the flood victims to get publicity by showing off prominent persons handing over food packets or dry rations to those affected. But they are not looking for a lasting solution for the problems, said the UNP spokesman.

When the media asked Gayantha Karunatilleke on the progress of the reforms in the UNP, he replied that proposals have already been received and discussed. These decisions will be ratified at the party’s annual convention scheduled in July and further action taken or decisions implemented.
