Sri Lanka Govt. needs to heal fissures in society: US State Department

Washington: The Rajapaksa government should work towards healing the fissures that exist in Sri Lankan society and use its electoral mandate to achieve the purpose, the USsaid Monday.

The Mahinda Rajapaksa-led government returned to the parliament last month with a thumping majority, but concerns have been raised internationally that the country remains polarised a year after the LTTE’s rout.

“The new government has received a considerable mandate and needs to use that mandate to heal the existing fissures across the Sri Lankan society,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said at his daily press conference.

Sri Lankamarked a year of the end of the war with the Tamil Tigers that caused widespread destruction and displacement in the North.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa was also re-elected earlier this year by a whopping mandate. - (PTI)
