The DMK of which M. Karunanidhi is the President today asked the Indian Centre to pursue the issue of resettlement of Sri Lankan Tamils who are lodged in camps with the government of the island nation and said it was “regrettable” that it has not seriously done it.
“It is a matter of regret that the Centre has not seriously pursued the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils’ resettlement. Though we have repeatedly asked them to address the issue, it has not taken sufficient efforts,” the DMK’s high-level action committee meeting said.
“We now urge the Centre to take effective measures to ensure proper rehabilitation of Sri Lankans in their post war native region,” it said.
Later speaking to reporters, Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi blamed the Sri Lankan government for not ensuring that adequate relief amount reached the Lankan Tamils.
In another decision, the meeting also asked the Centre to prevail upon Malaysian authorities to release 75 Sri Lankan Tamils, arrested and lodged in prisons in that country.
