Court raps police, student union leader released

The Colombo Chief Magistrate ordered the release of Inter University Students Union convenor Udul Premaratne this morning. He was produced in courts for allegedly causing public nuisance.
Udul Premaratne was produced in courts on a notice by the Cinammon Gardens Police. Police told courts that Mr. Premaratne was produced in courts for his statement to be recorded on the alleged charges.
Rapping the police, Chief Magistrate Champa Janaki Rajaratne asked why the police were producing a person in courts for a statement to be recorded. She stated that the police should implement their powers in the correct manner.
