Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera is new leader of JHU

Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera has been unanimously appointed the leader of the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) at the party’s seventh national convention at the New Town Hall in Colombo this evening (June 19).
This follows former leader Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera’s resignation as leader saying that he needed more time to devote on his pet subjects of archaeological research, JHU sources said.
Ven. Medhananda Thera has also stated that he did not have the time to engage in full time politics and that he was stepping down as leader, leaving the position in the hands of capable persons.
At the JHU national convention today, the following were elected for the respective posts:
Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera (Chairman) Power & Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka (General Secretary), Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe (national organizer) and Amal Jayawardena (Treasurer).
Another 33 members were appointed for the JHU’s Central Committee.
