UN panel flawed - Lanka

June 23, 2010   07:03 am

A United Nations panel appointed to investigate human rights violations in the final months of Sri Lanka’s civil war is running into top level local opposition. A senior Sri Lankan official says the panel is seriously flawed because of the appointment of former Indonesian attorney general Marzuki Darusman as its head.

He says Mr Darusman has been involved in the island before and had disagreements with local authorities.

The prominent Indonesian was a member of the International Independent Group of Eminent Persons that quit observing human rights investigations in Sri Lankain April 2008 after clashing with the local administration.

The official who declined to be named says in that context, having Mr Darusman in the panel could lead to a serious conflict of interest.

He repeated the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse’s opposition to the move, saying the investigation is unwarranted and uncalled for.

Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon launched the probe to advise him on the issue of accountability with regards to any alleged violations of international human rights and humanitarian law during the final stages of the conflict.
