In the event that the European Commission withdraws the GSP Plus concession to the island, they will work harder and send in more and more money to the country to offset the loss, say Sri Lankan workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in the UAE Sarath Wijesinghe says that the Sri Lankan workers in the West Asian country, who are the main earners of foreign exchange to Sri Lanka oppose the setting up of the UN panel to advice its Secretary General on human rights violations and war crimes in Sri Lanka.

“The Sri Lankan Government has said this panel is unacceptable and unwarranted. We stand by this statement. Sri Lanka will prosper with or without the GSP Plus. The Sri Lankans here are determined to work harder and contribute more towards the country,” said Ambassador Wijesinghe.

He urged the media, especially the English media in Sri Lanka to spread this message the world over saying that Sri Lanka is not alone. The island has the backing of several nations including Russia who are standing with Sri Lanka. “The media has to take the message across the world that Sri Lanka will prosper and definitely become the wonder of Asia,” said Ambassador Sarath Wijesinghe.
