France develops tsunami affected Trinco water supply

The French Government contributed its support to develop the water supply system of Greater Trincomalee which was severely affected by the tsunami disaster in 2004.
The signing of two new contracts will be another milestone in the contribution of France to the reconstruction of the Eastern Province as in the development of the friendly and cooperative partnership between the two countries.
Financing arrangements were implemented by the French Development Agency (AFD) at a value of Euro 10.35 million and Euro 12.5 million by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Employment in France under the RPE (Réserve Pays Emergents) financial facility.
The scope of the work includes the rehabilitation of the existing scheme and the construction of infrastructures which contains 12 MGD supply capacity and allows the supply water for more than 300,000 inhabitants.
The city of Trincomalee and its surroundings, the Greater Trincomalee areas are currently supplied with drinking water by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) through a hydraulic scheme which comes in extension of the initial treatment plant in Kantale implemented in the early 80’s and has been undertaken by French financing.
The French Consulting Engineer SCP (Societe du Canal de Provence) provides assistance to NWSDB for the Engineering Services.
France and Sri Lanka signed two contracts on the rehabilitation and extension of the Kantale Treatment Plant and the electro-mechanical equipment for the new pumping facilities. The two contracts will be undertaken by the leading French building and civil engineering company, “VINCI Construction Grands Projects” under the RPE financing.
The signing of the two contracts was held on Friday at the NWSDB in the presence of Christine Robichon, Ambassador of France to Sri Lanka, Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Water Supply & Drainage and Bruno Viviez, Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Embassy of France.
