TUC clarifies US GSP review

TUC clarifies US GSP review

July 6, 2010   11:13 am

In a press release today, the TUC clarified the misconception that US GSP is looking to review local labour laws. It said that this claim is untrue and baseless and the intention of the US GSP is only to review the labour violations highlighted in the petition put forth by the AFL-CIO.

The AFL-CIO very clearly sets out the series of systematic and intentional violations of labour rights in the apparel sector.

The Trade Union Confederation (TUC) also said that this is not an attempt to bring the government of Sri Lanka into disrepute or infringe the sovereignty of the State or its people but to guarantee basic rights of workers and to abide by the labour laws.

The TUC also stated that they are not politically affiliated and is the country’s largest public-private sector trade union confederation.
