Will resort to legal action if no Govt. assistance for service improvement: Private busmen

If the government assists the private bus operators to provide a quality bus service there is no need for a revision in the current bus fares, says the Lanka Private Bus Operators’ Association (LPBOA) chairman.
If the government does not take any positive measures in assisting them before July 20, the Association will seek legal redress and also resort to trade union action, said LPBOA chairman Gemunu Wijeratne while addressing a media briefing in Colombo this morning (July 6).
The government has authorized only a 0.5 per cent increase in bus fares. This will not help in any major improvement in service. If visible improvements are to be made the revision should be at least four per cent, said Mr. Wijeratne.
Gemunu Wijeratne charged that the National Transport Commission (NTC) is yet to explain to the private bus operators as to how it arrived at the recommendation of a 0.5 per cent fair hike.
