Ranil and G.L. cross swords over hunger strike

July 8, 2010   02:01 pm

Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris debated the issue of the hunger strike against the U.N. panel in parliament today. Mr. Wickremesinghe pointed out that the current situation could result in major difficulties for Sri Lankans when obtaining visa to foreign countries.

He also said that this could harm the reputation of Sri Lanka among the world. Furthermore, he guaranteed that no soldier will be taken to an international court under any circumstances.

Responding to this, Minister G.L. Peiris claimed that Ranil Wickremesinghe has asked the USA to make statements that would bring the government to disrepute. But Mr. Wickremesinghe rejected this claim, saying that he never made such a request.
