Fee levying universities will be established in Sri Lanka with around 20 per cent of the intake allocated as scholarship for local students, said Minister S.B. Dissanayake.

Higher Education Minister Dissanayake was addressing the 1,709 graduates of the Peradeniya University during the 2009 external degree convocation.

The establishment of private universities of international standard could provide a short term solution to problems faced by students, said S.B. Dissanayake. He added that measures are being taken to transform universities into centres which create graduates who could face the demands of the job market.
