A Sri Lankan telecommunications engineer were among 40 people killed in a hotel fire in northern Iraq, the chairman of their company told AFP on Friday.

“We lost four engineers from our company, one of them a woman from the Philippines, and three of them men from Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Iraq,” said Faruk Mula Mustafa, chairman of telecoms operator Asiacell.

Two other Iraqi employees were injured in the fire which broke out at around 10:30 pm (1930 GMT) on Thursday in Sulaimaniyah city, 270 kilometres (170 miles), north of Baghdad, Mustafa added.

Iraqi sources conveyed it was not a terrorist attack and most likely was a result of an electricity problem. An investigation is under way to find out the reason for the fire.
