The political party of detained General (retired) Sarath Fonseka marked its leader’s eighth month under custody by performing a pooja at the Seenigama Devalaya in Hikkaduwa on Saturday. Dashing of coconuts was done invoking blessings on Gen. Fonseka and gods’ wrath on the government.
However, among those present were Gen. Fonseka’s wife Anoma Fonseka and Kalutara District Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarian Arjuna Ranatunga. No representative from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) were reportedly present at the ceremony.
Was disagreement among the constituent parties of the DNA that made the JVP conspicious with its abscense, was the question utmost on the minds of most observers. DNA sources said that the party had met on Friday to discuss the invitation by the United National Party (UNP) for Fonseka to join it.
However, most JVP sources said that they knew nothing of the coconut dashing ceremony at Seenigama.
Sources were quick to point out that the reason may have been with the issue over Gen. Sarath Fonseka forming a new political party, the Democratic People’s Alliance earlier in July and the JVP’s displeasure over it.
The question now remains whether the wedge between the two groups which stood together during the Presidential election is widening or whether the two partied would go their separate ways.
