The Secretary to the Ministry of Defense, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has warned the contractors responsible for cleaning the Colombo City following complaints received that they are not performing their jobs adequately, Govt. Information Dept said.

With the number of Dengue cases reported nearing 26,000 to date this year, the Defense Secretary summoned a meeting of contractors who have undertaken Colombo’s waste disposal, and issued this warning.

Managing Directors (MD) of Abans, Carekleeners and other companies who have undertaken contracts for cleaning the Colombo City, engineers and several top officials of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) attended the meeting. Sources from officials attended the meeting said the Defense Secretary was armed with all the relevant information, especially the shortcomings in various city wards. He has pointed out to the Managing Director of Abans Cleaners that several zones coming under their purview have various shortcomings and asked for reasons, to which the MD responded that they have a shortage of vehicles. Similarly, the Managing Director of Carekleen has cited lack of sufficient labourers as the reason for their failure to provide optimum service, to which Mr. Rajapaksa has ssued an ultimatum to the cleaning companies to perform their services as contracted and make the city clean.

He made it clear to them that it was they who have undertaken the contracts from the CMC, and it is up to them to provide the necessary facilities, as they are ot doing the job for free. He has also pointed out that he executed the war in the North and the East with all sorts of shortcomings, but finally won it. He has also made it clear that if the contractors do not perform their services as expected, their services will be terminated. The Defense Secretary has also warned CMC engineers for failing to clean a particular canal. CMC Special Commissioner of the Colombo Municipal Council Mr. Omar Kamil also attended the meeting
