Watery duel between Kotahena police and Water Board

August 18, 2010   05:48 pm

The Kotahena Police has been accused by the National Water Supply & Drainage Board (NWS&DB) of using water illegally since 1996. NWS&DB sources claim that a payment of over Rs. 3.6 million is overdue from the said police station.

However, the police have regularly paid the bills amounting to around Rs. 5,000 per month for separate water pipeline which had been provided earlier, the sources said.

Though they were notified of the overdue amounts for the pipeline in question since January this year, the notifications had been ignored and disconnection was not allowed to be carried out, said the NWS&DB sources.

The sources also pointed out that the police usually intervene to take into custody those who refuse to pay their dues to the Board to produce them in courts.

However, when Adaderana inquired from the Kotahena Police regarding this incident, the Officer in Charge denied any knowledge. He said that the Police cannot take the law into their own hands and avoid paying utility bills. If that is done the connections could be discontinued by the provider, he said.
