Sajith gives statement regarding Algama self-immolation

The Mirihana Police this morning recorded the statement of Hambantota District United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa regarding the self-immolation of Rienzie Algama near the party headquarters recently.


Police had asked him whether he (Sajith) was the high ranking UNP member that Rienzie had spoken to a short while before the incident. He had replied in the negative, said Sajith Premadasa speaking to Adaderana a short while ago.


Mr. Premadasa said that he had not spoken to Mr. Algama on the day of the incident and that he did not know of same till later.


Don Algama Rupathunga don Rienzie Algama of Weligama, the 60-year-old who set himself ablaze opposite UNP headquarters Sirikotha end last month, was a full-time activist of the UNP for more than 29 years, according to reports.


He had set himself ablaze near Sirikotha and was admitted to hospital with severe burn injuries to which he succumbed later at the National Hospital in Colombo.
