Assault on IRD official, four suspects surrender

Three suspect over the incident of assault on an Inland Revenue Department (IRD) official have surrendered themselves to the Matara courts, says Police media spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody.

 

 

Matara Deputy Tax Commissioner H.M. Denzil was attacked by some persons from whom he would have collected taxes on behalf of the government. IRD employees mounted protests agitating the government to intervene and for the police to arrest the suspects involved in the attack.

 

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa too intervened and directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Mahinda Balasuriya to immediately arrest the suspects while also providing necessary security to IRD officers engaged in tax collection.

 

 

Police have also promised a cash reward of Rs. 500,000 to any one who provides information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
