The Supreme Court today warned and discharged ‘Lanka’ newspaper editor Chandana Sirimalwatte who was charged over contempt of court.

When the case was taken up today, defense counsel for Mr. Sirimalwatte had informed court that he, as the editor of ‘Lanka’ was willing to tender his apologies if the particular news report in question had caused any embarrassment to the Supreme Court.

After a written apology was submitted to court, Chandana Sirimalwatte was warned and discharged by the Supreme Court, says the Adaderana correspondent.

Though an individual had the right of expression, it should be used carefully within limits. Erroneous reports could convey a wrong impression to the public and could create a dangerous situation, Chief Justice Asoka de Silva had said while warning the accused.

Lanka editor Chandana Sirimalwatte gave an undertaking to the Supreme Court that he would publish an apology in the newspaper.
