Constitutional amendments in cabinet today

The draft constitutional amendments are scheduled to be presented to the cabinet meeting today. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne will be presenting the draft proposals at a special cabinet meeting held at Temple Trees and chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
A change in the executive president’s term period, the amending of Article 31(2) and the modifying of the 17th amendment are to be expected in the draft proposal.
If approval is received from the cabinet the draft constitutional amendments will be forwarded to the Supreme Court for approval and is scheduled to be presented to the Parliament next Monday as an urgent bill.
