Go for a referendum: UNP challenges Govt.

The proposed constitutional amendments do not reflect the wishes of the people. The government should hold a referendum to obtain the people’s consent. The United National Party (UNP) challenges the government to go for a referendum, said party General Secretary Tissa Attanayake.
The government is attempting to get the constitutional amendments passed by a two thirds majority in Parliament. It is in such a hurry to do this though the masses are suffering under so many problems, charged Tissa Attanayake addressing the media this morning (August 31).
Even though the President’s second term has not even begun the government is in a hurt to extend the term by pushing through the constitutional amendments. This goes against the wishes of the people, Mr. Attanayake said.
An important Bill like this is being brought before
Parliament as an urgent Bill without even presenting them to the people. They
have a right to know what the amendments are. Hence the UNP strongly opposes
this government move to bulldoze the constitutional amendments through
