In another show of solidarity between the two main Opposition political parties, Kandy district United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian A.R.M. Abdul Cader joined Premier D.M. Jayaratne on a march along the roads of Gampola this morning.
Mr. Cader and several of his supporters carried placards urging UNP members to support the government in passing the proposed Constitutional Amendments in Parliament on Wednesday. Abdul Cader had earlier predicted that over 160 Parliamentarians would vote with the government on the Constitutional Amendments.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne who marched alongside A.R.M.A. Cader said that there was nothing wrong with a person contesting for the Presidency more than twice. According to the 1978 Constitution a person can hold office only for two terms. If a person can contest for Parliament any number of times, what is wrong with a person contesting the Presidency more that twice, asked the Premier.
The President is elected by the voters. He or she does not elect or appoint himself or herself. So it will be the people’s choice who the President will be, reiterated Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne.
