They are not attempting to divide the United National Party. On the contrary, they are trying to unite an already divided party, Hambantota District Parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa told Adaderana this morning.
When Adaderana inquired from Mr. Premadasa about UNP member Dayasiri Jayasekera’s challenge to work as an independent group within Parliament if the UNP did not sort out the crises within, Sajith Premadasa said Mr. Jayasekera along with the rest were attempting to bring victory to the UNP and raise the already flagging morale of its supporters and voters.
They are pressing for the immediate revival of the party reforms proposals which are being conveniently forgotten. The leadership is trying to safeguard itself instead of the over 500,000 voters who stood by the party. They urge the UNP to carry forward the reforms quickly without letting the party erode further, said the Hambantota District Parliamentarian.
“We want to raise the UNP as a democratic force again. We have to gather the supporters from the city, urban, rural and village grassroots to make the UNP a party to recon with in the near future,” Mr. Premadasa said.
Meanwhile, those from the UNP who have reportedly threatened to work as an independent group in Parliament include several staunch and loyal party supporters. According to political sources, the list of 25 includes the names of at least four from the National List as well as four from Colombo and surrounding districts amongst others.
