Report Colombo hotels using tube wells in congested areas, says CMC

September 11, 2010   04:25 pm

The Colombo Municipal Council requests the public to report city hotels which utilize water from tube wells for their activities. They could contact the CMC on telephone number 011 2 67 6161.

The CMC Public Health Department head Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said that out of 36 water samples obtained from hotel and eating houses in the city, 20 had shown the presence of faecal matter.

This was due to the establishments using water from tube wells in the congested areas of the city. The underground water in congested areas is suspected to be contaminated with faecal matter due to the presence of septic tanks in very close proximity of each other, said Dr. Kariyawasam.
