Prisoners granted pardon on welfare day

The President has issued a common pardon to 1,312 prisoners including 37 females have been granted a common pardon to mark Prisoners’ Welfare Day, said Commissioner General of Prisons Major General V.R. de Silva.


The Prisons chief said that this group from prisons island-wide consisted of a cross section of persons serving varying lengths of imprisonment for various offences.


The majority of inmates in Sri Lankan prisons are those who serve sentences for minor offences like being unable to pay fines imposed on them by courts, indicate reports.
